Top Nine of 2018

My Instagram feed had a huge increase in sewing projects this year so it was no surprise to see that my top nine posts were all sewing related. The amount of interaction and engagement on these was really amazing and I thought it'd be fun to go over each of the makes in more detail since I've been slacking on the blog posts.

Here are the patterns for each of the makes in the photo above:
Top row: 1. Fringe Dress 2. Boundless Dress. 3. Boundless Dress.
Middle row: 4. Suki Kimono. 5. Kalle Shirt. 6. York Pinafore.
Bottom row: 7. York Pinafore. 8. Boundless Dress. 9. Tea House Dress.

A Year Of Sewing: Reflecting Back on 2018

Even though I’ve been sewing intermittently for years, this year’s choice to delve into the sewing world and sew myself a handmade wardrobe has been a game changer. My 2017 new year’s resolution to do more of what makes me happy made me take a look at sewing, sewing more in general as well as more for myself. I didn’t have any immediate goals or expectations for where it would take me, but being proactive has pushed me further than I could’ve dreamed and I’m really excited to reflect on everything I’ve accomplished this year.

Handmade Halloween: The One That Started It All!

Now that Halloween is right around the corner, I'm going back through our handmade Halloween history with the costume that started it all: Jadon's Naughty Noo Noo costume! What is it? Excellent question and one that almost every single person asked. Andrew and I had no idea that the journey to bringing this costume to life would be the beginning of a family tradition with no end in sight.

Marigold Floral Jumpsuit | #SewMyStyle2018

April's Sew My Style pattern was definitely a push outside my comfort zone, but that is kind of the point so I was happy to have a bit of a challenge. The jumpsuit isn't something I have in my wardrobe just yet so I decided to go for it. Turns out, I really enjoyed working through this pattern and my finished jumpsuit is actually quite fun and comfortable to wear. I'm happy to say that I've found a few occasions to wear this to including a special day with the queen of jumpsuits herself, Alison Faulkner.

2017: The Year of Travel | New York

I love New York. I've been to visit a few times as a teen and I've always wanted to go back. It's been at the top of my favorite places and I finally had a chance to go back with the entire family last year during our epic east coast road trip. Andrew has never been a fan of larger cities so New York never appealed to him which made it hard to convince him to take a trip there. It was never on the radar until last year when our obsession with Hamilton hit. So did we really plan an entire 10 day long trip to the east coast soley because we scored tickets to Hamilton on Broadway? Yes, yes we did. That is exactly how this crazy trip idea started.

Kalle Shirt and Shirtdress | #SewMyStyle2018

The Kalle shirt and shirtdress pattern from Closet Case Patterns wasn't exactly love at first sight for me. I've never been a huge button up wearer and it isn't really a style I would normally pick myself. Since it's the March Sew My Style challenge, I decided to go for it anyway and get some more experience under my belt. With it already being half way through the month, I've successfully completed two versions of this pattern and am really glad I pushed outside my comfort zone. Not only did I learn a few new things, I also have two pieces that look way more polished than my usual wardrobe.

2017: The Year of Travel | Boston

Our first visit to the east coast as a family took place in a whirlwind 10 day long trip that started in Boston. We've always had illusions of doing crazy long road trips to cover as much ground as possible, but this was the first time we have ever done it to this extent. Starting in Boston and winding our way through New York, Philadelphia, and DC, this trip gave us a nice overview of Colonial America while also allowing us to take advantage of as much as we could while we were there.

Airfare isn't cheap, epecially when you have kids that aren't free anymore. Aiming to be as budget friendly as possible, it's natural for us to throw in as much as we can whenever we splurge on airfare. That being said, this was a crazy idea to start with and we were actually pretty exhausted well before we were done.

A Geeky Valentine's Day Dress

With making apparel heavily on my mind, this dress is where it all started. Isabelle picked out the two fabrics herself and insisted on having both of them in one dress. I searched online to find the perfect pattern and stumbled into a rabbit hole of independent designers and patterns, including the one I used for this dress: Clara by Violette Field Patterns. This isn't my first PDF pattern, but it definitely is what helped me fall back into the sewing world.

2017: The Year of Travel | Universal Studios Hollywood

Our last day in the Los Angeles area was dedicated to visiting Universal Studios Hollywood. The last time I visited was when I was in grade school and Andrew and the kids had never been. I remember this park a lot better than others I visited when I was younger so I was excited to go back with the whoel family. We didn't have ton of expectations and were all there for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter which proved to be just as amazing as we could've hoped for. Considering the amount of rain we had the day before, this day turned out to be absolutely perfect with clear blue skies. We specifcally picked a day to go when lines were at their shortest which also make the day a success.

DIY Quick & Simple Floor Cushions!

One day I was looking at my kids sitting on the ground in front of the TV and it occured to me how nice it would be to have some sort of seat for them. Even though we have plenty of seating options, my kids (especially Isabelle) almost always choose to sit on the ground. They took over the new mattress topper we purchased for our sofa bed, but I knew that couldn't last long. As much as I don't care how my house looks from day to day, a full size mattress in the middle of the living room just isn't practical. I kept thinking about how nice it would be to have some sort of cushion. After researching and realizing how pricey they could be, I decided to try my hand at making my own.

Sundance 2018 | Juliet Naked and Damsel

The director of Juliet, Naked during Q&A.

Sundance. It's the one thing that I look forward to every January. Every year we have a system to pick our top choices and then we hope for the best. This was the first year I was in the waiting room hoping to purchase tickets. Although it was a bit of a wait, it was pretty easy once I got in. Some of the top picks were already sold out by the time I got in, but one of our top picks was still in the running so we grabbed it along with another top choice. With two films to attend, this was one of our most laid back years yet.

2017: The Year of Travel | Los Angeles & Disneyland

Off on another trip! This time to Los Angeles.

We planned a trip to the Los Angeles area in the spring to take advantage of the kids' school break. We aren't super familiar with the area even though we've been a number of times, but we managed to cram in as much as we could in the 4 days we were there. With 2 of those days dedicated to Disneyland and Universal Studios, the rest of our time here was pretty leasurely.

2017: The Year of Travel | Seattle & Portland

2017 was deemed the year of travel right from the start. It was full of adventures and our biggest travel year to date. We started the year in Seattle and Portland, spent the the kids' school breaks in Los Angeles and traveling the east coast (Boston, NYC, Philly, DC), took the kids on their 2nd trip to San Diego Comic Con, celebrated my birthday in Disneyland, and followed Andrew to a conference in San Francisco. There was even more traveling happening when I went to more places because of my Posh business including Costa Rica, New Orleans (where Andrew also tagged along), and Las Vegas.

Because I haven't been very good at keeping up the blogging, I figured a series of catch up posts were in order to sum up the trips. It was an epic year full of travel which included 5 family flights, 14 states visited, and a renewed sense of wanderlust as we get into 2018.

Estelle Ponte Jacket | #SewMyStyle2018

My first make for the Sew My Style project is complete and I couldn't be more thrilled with how it turned out! I'm not very experienced with sewing with knits so it was a bit scary to delve into this pattern and material, but it turned out to be a very straight forward process after I figured out how to read the instructions. I've been very deliberate in focusing more of my energy and time on things that I enjoy doing and this challenge was exactly what I was looking for. With my first make complete, I can't wait to get started on making more clothing for myself and pushing outside my comfort zone.
