I clearly have a favorite. I’ve tried other pants patterns, but I keep coming back to the Free Range Slacks from Sew House Seven. Partly because I like familiarity, but mostly because this pattern fulfills my needs.
I love the elastic waist, the pockets, that it only takes 1.5-ish yards of fabric, and the look of the tapered legs. Sure, there’s another view with wide legs, but I haven’t even made that version yet.
For a full pattern review and sizing details, including the first 4 pairs I made, check out this post.
Most of my first pairs from several years ago have officially been handed down to my teen now that they don’t fit me as well. To think I was super critical of my body at that point is crazy to me now. It’s normal for bodies to change and grow, and I’m getting better about letting go of handmade clothes that no longer work for me.
Here’s a short roundup of how I’ve worn my Free Range Slacks:

All of the clothing above, except the Mandalorian graphic tee, was also made by me. You’ll find my Free Range Slacks in plenty of posts on my Instagram as well, because I really wear a pair as often as I can.
From left to right:
- 1: Adventure Tank by Fancy Tiger Crafts and linen/cotten blend Free Range Slacks.
- 2: Lola Top by Fibre Mood and linen Free Range Slacks.
- 3: Gilbert Top by Helen’s Closet and linen/rayon blend Free Range Slacks.
- 4: Laurence Top by Vivian Shao Chen and linen Free Range Slacks.
- 5: Hacked Hemlock Tee by Grainline Studio, Novice Slipover by Petite Knit and cotton Free Range Slacks.
- 6: Cambria Duster by Friday Pattern Co. and twill Free Range Slacks.
Have you tried the Free Range Slacks pattern yet?
