I didn’t think I’d go all in on a Project Hail Mary costume this year, but here we are. Here’s everything I made and purchased to bring this costume to life.

You could go with a few different versions of Grace from the movie. I chose to do one of his looks from the spaceship, with his coveralls tied around his waist and his fox cardigan over the red/white ringer tee.
The Inspiration:

The result:

What I Wore:
- Sweatpants and a zip-up hoodie tied around my waist to make it look like a coverall or spacesuit. Grace wears orange, yellow, and red coveralls/spacesuits throughout the movie and often ties the sleeves around his waist when he’s inside the spaceship. I looked into making/buying a jumpsuit, but ultimately decided it didn’t make sense and that I could achieve a similar look with something I’d wear again. I chose red to match my t-shirt.
- Horse Shoe Bend ringer tee. He wears a lot of science pun graphic tees, and you could choose any of them, but I chose the one seen on a lot of the marketing materials.
- Handmade fox cardigan. You don’t need the fox cardigan for a Grace costume, but I had to include the one I knitted before I decided to pull this costume together. Alternatively, you could commission a handmade one from someone who knits to sell. This one on Amazon is also intriguing, and I’m half tempted to buy it just so I can compare it to the one I made. I highly doubt it’s going to be as good or movie-accurate, but I know a handmade one can be difficult to get.
- Retro striped socks. Not everyone will recognize this, but it’s fun if you want to be really detailed. The yellow and navy striped set is almost exactly what you see Grace wearing in the movie.
Additional accessories:
- Sour Skittles: Grab a pack to carry around or grab some fun-sized ones to hand out. I got a variety pack of fun-size Skittles to hand out.
- A crochet Earth hacky sack. Toss this to people and ask them, “What’s the speed of light?” I didn’t get one for my costume, and tossed a bag of Skittles instead.

Must-Have: Rocky in his ball
My costume really wouldn’t have been complete without Rocky, and having Rocky made a lot bigger of an impact than my sweats and cardigan outfit by itself. Check out this post to make your own.
Because I wanted a bigger Rocky and ball, it’s a bit too cumbersome to carry around everywhere. For my family’s annual Halloween party, I ended up putting him in random places for most of the party, and only kept him by me when I was presenting for the costume contest. I don’t think I’d take Rocky to a convention unless I had an easy way to store/carry him. I’m half tempted to figure out a way to make a harness for him, but that’s a future problem.

And that’s it! I’m really glad I chose to do this costume. I didn’t expect the reception I’ve received so far, and it’s been fun to do a more recognizable costume this year. Plus, it’s super comfortable and works well with thermals underneath for cold weather.
Are you dressing up as Ryland Grace? I’d love to see your version!
